EARS HAVE EYES: DEEP DREAM, DARK WEB:

Happy New Ears, Earlings!  A new work of radio art by The Mind’s Ear’s very own Ernestus Jiminy Chald will premiere this Wednesday—January 10th—at 8 p.m. MT (9 p.m. for Chicago listeners and 7 p.m. for California listeners) on the latest installment of the Ears Have Eyes series on CJSW Radio (90.9 FM) in Calgary.  Those unable to tune in on the FM dial in Canada can listen via the station’s livestream by clicking here.
Ears Have Eyes is a monthly radio program showcasing cutting-edge sound art produced by artists from around the world revolving around, or inspired by, a specific unique theme each month.  This month’s theme is: “DEEP DREAM, DARK WEB: Auditory AI, Computer Compositions, and Digital Digressions”.  The piece that Chald produced for this program is entitled “Tomorrow is Today”.

As Artificial Intelligence technology continues to rapidly advance, questions arise regarding the potential impact that AI may have on humanity long term.  As with many forms of technological advancement, the more we gain is often the more we lose.  Will this emergent technology elevate our species to new, unimaginable heights?  Or is it an active threat to the well-being of mankind that will ultimately spell our doom?  Tune in to CJSW Radio (90.9 FM) this Wednesday evening to find out!

“Tomorrow is Today” is the second piece of radio art that Chald has produced exclusively for Ears Have Eyes.   You can listen to his first piece for this program, “CAKEHOLE” in their archives by clicking here.

R.I.P. UNCLE DENNIS:

One of the founding fathers of Free Radio Santa Cruz, Uncle Dennis, has passed away.

FRSC listeners will know Uncle Dennis as the host of “From the Cream to the Dregs”,  as well as from his eye-opening eco-news programs like “Earth First! Update”, but behind the scenes he was so much more to us at the station. He was a dear friend, a loyal comrade, a great teacher, and a devoted leader, who kept the station afloat for decades during times of great turbulence, while passing on his arcane knowledge to new generations of radio pirates.

Stay tuned to Free Radio Santa Cruz (101.3 FM) for updates regarding upcoming tribute programs to Uncle Dennis.

THE MIND’S EAR PROGRAM #33 PREMIERES ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13TH:

On November 18th, 1978, 918 people perished in Guyana in what has come to be known as the Jonestown Tragedy.  The vast majority of those who perished were American citizens, and the Jonestown Tragedy remained the greatest loss of American life in a single deliberate act until the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, 2001.  “Regret this very Day” is a multi-part, nonlinear experimental radio documentary about the Peoples Temple and its charismatic founder Jim Jones produced by Ernestus Jiminy Chald.  Unlike more traditional documentaries, “Regret this very Day” has no narrator or explanatory notes to fill the listener in on the particularities of what occurred within the Peoples Temple.  Instead, Ernestus Jiminy Chald laboriously examined hundreds of hours of recorded tapes left behind by the Peoples Temple and selected material from these tapes to give the listener a glimpse into the world that Jim Jones and his followers inhabited.

People often wonder how this sort of event could have happened.  Why would nearly 1,000 people become so devoted to a single man and his revolutionary cause that they would literally give up their lives for him when ordered to do so?  To many, such a notion seems absurd and unfathomable.  But when one listens to these tapes and considers the circumstances surrounding what happened in Jonestown on that fateful day and the events that led up to it, a portrait begins to emerge of a community that simply wanted to create a better world for their children than the racist, hateful world that American society offered them, and of the captivating leader who promised to create that world for them.

Tune in to the world premiere of “Regret This Very Day: Volume I” on Saturday, October 13th at 9 p.m. (PST) on Free Radio Santa Cruz (101.3 FM).  An encore rebroadcast will be presented on Sunday, October 14th at 7 p.m. (PST).

THE MIND’S EAR PROGRAM #30 PREMIERES ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 11TH:

This weekend on The Mind’s Ear: Ernestus Jiminy Chald’s auricular gift to fungiculturalists and mycologists around the world, “Music to Grow Mushrooms to”.

“Music to Grow Mushrooms to” is the culmination of countless hours of rigorous research and experimentation involving the listening habits of mycelium.  After making the discovery that his mushrooms grow exponentially when they are given constant exposure to music, Chald began experimenting with different types of musical rhythms, harmonic progressions, infrasonic frequencies, and timbres in an attempt to develop the ideal playlist for his mushrooms to grow to.  “Music to Grow Mushrooms to” is the apotheosis of Chald’s experimentation in the creation of music for mycelium.

Mushrooms exposed to these recordings under controlled conditions from the moment of inoculation have been documented as growing, on average, 30% faster than mushrooms growing in silence.  Although humans can also listen to–and possibly derive some enjoyment from–the mycelial music featured in these recordings, they are intended to be listened to by mushrooms.  For optimal results, it is recommended that you play these recordings on a continuous loop at relatively low volume during all stages of your mushrooms’ growth–from inoculation to harvest. This music is equally beneficial to all species of mushrooms, and further research is currently being conducted into its effects on other fungal fruiting bodies.

Tune in to the premiere of “Music to Grow Mushrooms to” on Saturday, August 11th at 9 p.m. (PST) on Free Radio Santa Cruz (101.3 FM).  There will be an encore rebroadcast on Sunday, August 12th at 7 p.m. (PST).

THE MIND’S EAR PROGRAM #26 PREMIERES ON SATURDAY, JULY 14TH:

Back in February, Chald premiered an entire radio program aired in reverse entitled “About Face”.  Many listeners were perplexed by this, with some even emailing us under the assumption that “About Face” was run backwards by mistake.  This was, obviously, not the case, as the program was intended to be listened to backwards.  After receiving so many questions about this program, Chald decided he would air it again, only this time he has reversed the reversed program, so that listeners can now hear this backwards broadcast forwards for the first time ever.

You can tune in to the world premiere of “Bent Over Backwards” tomorrow night–Saturday, July 14th–at 9 p.m. (PST) on Free Radio Santa Cruz.  There will be an encore rebroadcast of “Bent Over Backwards” on Sunday, July 15th at 7 p.m. (PST) on Free Radio Santa Cruz.

You missed your opportunity to tune in to “Mingle-Mangle” last weekend, didn’t you?  Fret not, friend—you can listen at your leisure in The Mind’s Ear Archives.

This weekend’s program will be a special Christmas edition of The Mind’s Ear entitled “A Stockingful of Coal”.

“A Stockingful of Coal” is the antithesis of every heartwarming Christmas show you’ve heard in the past.  Hopeless and bleak, this program peels back the holiday’s jolly facade like a scab, exposing its festering inner truths and revealing hidden secrets about its dark side.  Featuring an all-star cast of special guests including the legendary Bryan Lewis Saunders and Wayne June, “A Stockingful of Coal” is the Anti-Christmas show you never knew you needed to hear but will certainly never forget.

“A Stockingful of Coal” will air on Saturday, December 23rd at 9 p.m. (PST) and Sunday, December 24th—Christmas Eve—at 7 p.m. (PST) on Free Radio Santa Cruz (101.3 FM).

THE MIND’S EAR PROGRAM #4 PREMIERES ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16TH:

Those who failed to tune in to “Repercussus” last weekend can now listen to the program in its entirety in The Mind’s Ear Archives.

This weekend’s program, “Mingle-Mangle“, will premiere on Saturday, December 16th at 9 p.m. (PST) on Free Radio Santa Cruz.  There will be an encore rebroadcast on Sunday, December 17th at 7 p.m. (PST).  Tune in on 101.3 FM in Santa Cruz or dive into the live stream here.

“Mingle-Mangle” is the auditory equivalent of a long-form internet meme.  Using a combination of found sound recordings and original compositions, Ernestus Jiminy Chald followed a rigid set of seemingly arbitrary rules and constraints in the construction of this program, making it almost Oulipian in execution.  At times disturbing, at times hilarious, at times hilariously disturbing, “Mingle-Mangle” is the type of program that leaves you feeling violated, enlightened, and confused, as all great works of art should.

A special message will be presented at the end of this weekend’s broadcasts for those who have purchased their very own Super Secret Mind’s Ear Decorder Ring.

THE MIND’S EAR PROGRAM #3 PREMIERES ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9TH:

If you were unable to tune in to “Anomalous Airwaves” last weekend, you can now listen to the program in its entirety in The Mind’s Ear Archives.  You can also purchase a copy of “Anomalous Airwaves” on compact disc from the Peisithanatos Records store.

The Mind’s Ear program #3: “Repercussus” will receive it’s premiere broadcast on Saturday, December 9th at 9 p.m. (PST).  There will be an encore rebroadcast on Sunday, December 10 at 7 p.m. (PST) on Free Radio Santa Cruz (101.3 FM).

“Repercussus” is a contemplative program revolving around the theme of reflections—aural reflections, optical reflections, and philosophical reflections.  Voices from the present are absorbed by voices from the past within a protean landscape of murky sound, leaving the listener to reflect upon their own life and the manners in which their past informs their present.

INFECTIOUS AIRWAVES:
The Mind’s Ear will be premiering on Free Radio Santa Cruz in a matter of mere weeks. Until then, you can tune in to Radiophrenia on November 9th to hear the premiere of  “Infectious Airwaves”, a 60 minute program written and produced by Ernestus Jiminy Chald that simulates a weaponized radio broadcast capable of transmitting an auricular pathogen over the airwaves—a sonic contagion that infiltrates listeners’ ears, leaving them afflicted with a terminal auditory infection.  Visit the Radiophrenia schedule page for more details.
